Jun 4, 2012 - Jun 6, 2012

Washington DC

On the initiative of Seán Kelly, Member of the European Parliament, and driven by a number of European research Infrastructures and scientific initiatives, a series of global biomedical sciences cooperation events will be held from the 4th to the 6th of June in Washington DC.

The following infrastructures and initiatives will be presented:

(1) Information Technology Future of Medicine (ITFoM), FET Flagship Pilot Project

(2) Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI)

(3) European Clinical Research Infrastructures Network (ECRIN)

The sequence of events will include:

p       ITFoM & Austrian participation in international research initiatives using the example of BBMRI (Tuesday, 5th June, Austrian Embassy)

p       EU-US Science Collaboration (Monday, 4th June, Irish Embassy)

p       Research Infrastructures: BBMRI & ECRIN (Wednesday, 6th June, French Embassy)

During the seminars in the Austrian and French Embassies, the Project Coordinators will give short presentations on their Initiatives, followed by their corresponding US counterparts, and rounded off by an extensive discussion amongst key policy-makers. An evening reception at the Irish Embassy will complete the events hosted by Embassies.

The goal of these events is to raise awareness amongst EU and US decision-makers of the necessity of interactions between three levels of coordination at the international level: scientific, regulatory and political.

Furthermore, the objective will be to explore the potential for exploitation and cooperation from the point of view of standards, regulation, legislation, policies, funding and programme operations related to issues such as drug and medical diagnostics development, sustainable health care and scientific evidence-based policy and decision making. The aim is to raise awareness of the international importance of those initiatives at a global level. Even though they’re currently European in scope, proper integration into a global context is essential.
