An ageing population, expectations of a better quality of life and changing lifestyles call for improved, more effi cient and aff ordable healthcare. A better understanding of the functioning of the human body at the molecular and nanometre scale as well as the ability to intervene at pre-symptomatic, acute or chronic stages of an illness are of utmost importance to meet these expectations.
